About Us
Our Mission
Holy Cross Lutheran Church is God's family gathered together around God's Word and Sacrament, dedicated to sharing the love and forgiveness of God that is ours through our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. The ministry of Holy Cross is committed to bringing Christ Jesus to the community, to educating people about their Savior through Sunday School, Youth Ministry, Adult Education, and serving the community in its social needs.
Our Beliefs
As a Lutheran Church we believe that Jesus Christ alone rules us all through the Bible Scriptures and saves us by grace through faith. We honor the ancient fathers of the Church, confess the ancient creeds, and worship with the historical liturgies. We gladly and freely use the whole Church's heritage of hymns and traditions with which Christians have exalted their Savior for over two thousand years.
We reject the idea that we could ever earn or deserve God's love, and instead we rejoice in our Baptism, Confession and Absolution, and in the Holy Supper of the Lord. We know that through Jesus he himself comes to us with grace and saving power. We know that all of us are sinners who trust in Jesus Christ and are judged on His performance, not our own. This Good News is our hope and happiness, and is the center of our faith and worship.
What We Believe
-
In One God in Three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
-
That God the Father Almighty created the universe.
-
That God the Son became the Man Jesus Christ, and obeyed and died instead of us to pay for the sins of all people for all time.
-
That Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, is Lord over all and will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.
-
That God the Holy Spirit seeks us and brings us to faith in Jesus by His Sacraments and Word, whether proclaimed by the Spirit's strength from the Scriptures, or written by the Spirit's inspiration in the Scriptures, which are the true, perfect, and saving words of God the Holy Spirit.
-
That we are saved by God's freely given sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus Christ, through trust in Him, and not through anything we do.
-
That to God you are worth dying for and that God's love for you is the reason we are here.
Holy Cross is a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. This is an international church consisting of over 6000 congregations in the U.S. and missionaries in over 50 foreign countries.
History
In 1953 interest was expressed in starting an LCMS congregation in the Arlington area of Jacksonville. Land for the new church was purchased in October of that year and ground was broken in September 1954. The cornerstone of Holy Cross Chapel was placed into position on January 23, 1955. As Holy Cross grew, a Christian Day School was started and an education building with gym was dedicated in 1961. In 1968 the present Church sanctuary was dedicated.
The education facility currently is occupied by the Academy of Scholars (AOS), a private school dedicated to providing a quality education to students who struggle to master the skills of becoming life-long learners due to factors including but not limited to social, emotional, and environmental changes in our society. AOS promise to provide learning experiences that will foster our students in a way that will ensure their continuous success from the time our doors welcome them in until our doors are opened to allow them to embark on their own goals and commitments. http://www.academyofscholarsinc.org/
The Chapel is currently occupied by the Hospital Church. The Hospital Church is a Fundamental Church. http://www.jesusmeds.org/.
